Introduced in 2001, the Dot NAME generic Top-Level Domain is the only one planned for personal websites only. These domain names can include personal or fictitious names, aliases and/or other titles people are popular by. At first, only third-level registrations were allowed, so if you wanted to obtain john.doe.name, you were supposed to do that under .doe.name. In 2004, however, the registration process was liberalized and 2nd-level registrations were also allowed. Already bought third-level domains remained working.
